Project title: MicroOil- Research on Oleaginous Microorganisms and Development of New Biotechnological Processes
Project duration: 2012-2015

Budget: € 280.000
Financial support: Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology, European Union

Short project description

The current project runs in the framework of the action "ARISTEIA", in the operational program “Education and Lifelong learning”, 2007-2013. MicroOil project is focused on the elucidation of important biochemical events occurring into the cells of the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, cultivated on different hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates. Moreover, we aim to develop innovative biotechnological applications using selective strains of oleaginous Zygomycetes cultivated on numerous low cost substrates (agro-industrial residues) for cost effective production of single cell oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. The current project will be accomplished in 5 Work Packages in collaboration with the Laboratory of Food Microbiology & Biotechnology (Agricultural University of Athens).
